I can’t hide my excitement—Mecha Break is simply outstanding. When I first tried it about a year ago, I was impressed, but playing it now from the comfort of home has completely hooked me. Yes, it’s not without its faults, but as an open beta during Steam Next Fest, it’s hard to find another game I’d prefer diving into right now.
For those who haven’t yet encountered it, Mecha Break is an online multiplayer shooter. You’re thrown into the mix with other players in one of two modes: classic online PvP matches or the action-packed, extraction-shooter style PvPvE brawls known as Mashmak. With a great selection of mechs and unlockable colors plus pilot outfits, this beta is packing more content than most.
Now, let’s chat about Mashmak. The map is vast, making every player encounter a thrilling challenge. Plus, I’m a huge fan of the map bosses; taking on these gigantic robots feels like a raid boss experience, more intense than anything in similar modes. Still, it’s the traditional online PvP that has captured my heart. The six versus six battles could easily become my next live service obsession. Honestly, I’m having way more fun here than with games like Overwatch or Rainbow Six Siege.
There are two big reasons for this newfound addiction. First, there’s the presentation. If you’re into mechs, this game is pure visual delight. Take your pick: small mechs with sniper rifles, ones that morph into planes for bombing runs, or massive tanks equipped with gatling guns. The variety is staggering, and it’s hard to imagine someone not finding a mech they love. The slight downside? Unlocking some of these mechs requires quite a bit of in-game currency, which can be a bit of a downer. Nevertheless, you can assemble a solid lineup of each type without too much grind.
Secondly, the movement system is just top-notch. Initially, it’s all about boosting to wherever you need to be, with straightforward air and ground maneuvers. But once you get the hang of it, you’re zooming all over, deftly managing energy and using your mech’s abilities to outmaneuver your opponents. When two skilled players face off, it’s a mesmerizing dance of parries, dashes, combos, and the occasional ranged attack—a beautiful showcase of skill.
In this beta phase, the game seems pretty generous with its rewards. There’s a battle pass in the works, and while it’s not active yet, it looks like a whole mech will be part of it. Fingers crossed that free-to-play players won’t have too much trouble getting it. At the moment, some ultra-rare mods can be crafted by combining high-quality items from Mashmak, giving minor boosts to your mechanical warriors. This might raise some concerns, but how hard it’ll be to snag the perfect mod setup is still up in the air. Let’s hope it’s not too taxing on the wallet.
Honestly, this game just appeared out of nowhere during Steam’s Next Fest, and it’s simply brilliant. If you’ve got some time and a hankering for a new PvP shooter, I highly recommend giving it a try. It’s unique and captivating—dive in! I’m confident you’ll find a playstyle that resonates with you.
