The voice actors for the French version of Apex Legends have apparently taken a stand against a contract clause related to AI training. Pascale Chemin, the talent behind Wraith’s voice in the French version of this popular battle royale game, shared on Twitter that a publisher—likely Electronic Arts—wanted to include a clause in their contracts. This clause would have allowed their voices to be used for training AI algorithms. While the specific game and publisher weren’t explicitly named, all signs suggest that Apex Legends and EA are at the heart of this situation.
On top of that, it seems like the resistance is widespread, as 31 other voice actors involved in the project have reportedly joined Chemin in rejecting the agreement. They’ve even penned a letter to formally refuse these terms.
In a translated Twitter post shared by ResetEra, Chemin stressed the importance of unity at this critical moment. “If we don’t come together now to secure a clause that protects our voices, not just for us, but for all video game dubbing studios, we’ll never have another chance. We’re heading straight towards a disaster,” she warned.
Chemin also highlighted the difficult position they’re in: refusing work outright isn’t a viable option for many, given the scarcity of available projects. “Financially, a paycheck would be advantageous,” she acknowledged. “However, this isn’t just about work. We’re essentially being asked to forfeit our expertise to train AI, the very technology that could ultimately make us redundant. It’s like being asked to help replace ourselves. Supporting AI in this context is like shooting ourselves in the foot.”
