The famous French publisher Ubisoft seems to be working on a new battle royale game that’s aiming to give Apex Legends a run for its money. According to a report from Insider Gaming, this project is currently going by the codename “Scout.” Interestingly, it shares such a strong resemblance with Respawn and EA’s popular game that some of its artwork was once used as a placeholder thumbnail. There are also whispers about characters that bear a striking similarity to those in Apex Legends. This venture has apparently been in development for quite a while now.
The strategy behind this move from Ubisoft appears to be quite calculated. With Apex Legends experiencing a bit of a downturn financially, even Electronic Arts has owned up to it. One insider put it this way: “The idea is to capitalize on the declining player numbers of Apex and to seize the opportunity to introduce another compelling hero battle royale.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at capturing the free-to-play battle royale crowd. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, although that particular project didn’t end well, wrapping up after a mere 18 months. And more recently, Ubisoft decided to pull the plug on the free-to-play shooter XDefiant towards the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends can look forward to a fresh take with a 2.0 version expected to drop sometime after April 2026. It seems the battle for supremacy in the hero battle royale genre is far from over, and Ubisoft is gearing up for a strong entry.
