If you’re familiar with the British Isles, you might not immediately think of Birmingham as an ideal setting for a video game. But picture it back in the 14th century and teeming with zombies. Suddenly, it’s got serious potential. This is exactly the vibe of “God Save Birmingham,” and after seeing around eight minutes of its gameplay footage, I’m more excited than ever for a zombie game.
Typically, I’m a fan of co-op zombie experiences overflowing with massive hordes and absurd weaponry. Think Call of Duty Zombies or Dead Island 2. That’s why titles like Killing Floor 3 and John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando have been at the top of my anticipated games list. But “God Save Birmingham” has just surged past them.
This isn’t your typical co-op, horde-blasting game where you dispatch zombies with electrified bats or vacuum them up with jet turbines. After watching the latest trailer on IGN, I get serious The Last of Us vibes, with its third-person stealth and hefty takedown animations. While the narrative might not reach TLOU levels, in terms of zombie takedowns, it’s definitely hitting the mark.
The game emphasizes interacting with your environment. You can use furniture to block doorways, convert ladders into bridges for gaps, or stand on chairs to reach higher ledges. Everything, from you to the zombies, reacts realistically, turning the world into an engaging sandbox.
The new trailer dives into its survival mechanics, showcasing how you’ll manage hunger, thirst, fatigue, and even panic. Handling these requires real-time interaction with your inventory—no quick menu pauses for instant snacks here. Jumping from heights can injure your leg, slowing you down. You can disassemble objects for materials, and there’s a full cooking system in place too.
Visually, it’s stunning, and the medieval setting brings a fresh twist to the zombie genre. Although there’s no firm release date yet, early access is on the horizon.
