Available on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, Fortnite continues to be an enigma wrapped in a gaming phenomenon. Currently, players find themselves facing off against Godzilla, with the overarching mission being simple: survive!
Fortnite and I have a bit of a love-hate relationship these days. It’s a far cry from its electrifying debut year when each game felt like a chaotic yet thrilling mix of skilled and amateur players. Back then, matches were unpredictable, filled with moments of surprise and humor. However, this has largely dissipated. Now, an encounter with opponents mostly means routine skirmishes against bots that practically offer themselves up for easy takedowns. The enigmatic narrative that once suggested something deeper and left room for imagination has been swapped out for MMORPG-style quests with chatty NPCs explaining every detail. Each week, new characters from popular franchises appear in the shop, chipping away at Fortnite’s unique identity and pushing it closer to a corporate mishmash reminiscent of a dystopian “Ready Player One” scenario.
Despite my reservations, Fortnite’s appeal is undeniable. There’s something about navigating its diverse landscapes with ease that I can’t quite resist. Running, sliding, leaping, and scaling across its terrain still gives a visceral sense of freedom. On challenging days, I find myself tapping in to complete a few simple quests and earn easy XP, losing myself in the process, even if just for a little while. And let’s not forget Fortnite’s knack for delivering jaw-dropping spectacles unlike any other game. Right now, Godzilla himself may appear in any match, dominating the battlefield. A clip I watched online showed how amazing it feels to take on Godzilla’s role—the sense of size and destructive force perfectly captured. This weekend, I’m gearing up to dive into more Fortnite sessions than usual, eager to experience that colossal power firsthand as I scramble for survival from something genuinely threatening. So, if you’re diving into the chaos of Fortnite and transform into Godzilla, please spare the tiny player fleeing below. I come in peace! — Carolyn Petit
