Assassin’s Creed Shadows introduces players to an exciting new escapade set in 16th-century Japan. Yet, despite its fresh setting, players will recognize some familiar story elements. At its core, the narrative pivots around taking down the Templars, a recurring theme that’s been a hallmark of the Assassin’s Creed series. Moreover, much of the gameplay revolves around rebuilding the Brotherhood and gathering allies to protect Japan. But perhaps the most resonate theme of all in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is that of found family.
The motif of found family has increasingly captured the storytelling landscape, becoming a beloved narrative choice across various titles. Assassin’s Creed is well-versed with this theme, and Shadows indeed embraces it wholeheartedly. The characters embark on a journey to find belonging, forge unbreakable bonds, and fiercely protect their newfound companions. Even if this setup rings a bell, it doesn’t detract from the captivating adventure it presents.
From the outset, Assassin’s Creed Shadows immerses players in the theme of found family. After narrowly escaping death at the hands of Oda Nobunaga, who annihilates the Iga and kills Nagato, Naoe finds herself saved by a mysterious figure named Sorin and a youngster named Junjiro. Initially wary, Naoe gradually learns to trust and care for her saviors. Together, they form a resilient bond and play crucial roles in resurrecting the fallen Brotherhood.
Throughout her journey, Naoe encounters more individuals who earn her trust and protection. Yet, it’s her connection with Junjiro that’s unparalleled. Treating him as her own family, her determination to safeguard him knows no bounds. Even with the shadow of his father’s death looming over their relationship, Junjiro is equally committed to Naoe. Their bond is a pillar of Naoe’s journey through Japan, resulting in a deeply engaging and heartfelt narrative.
A significant layer to the story is the evolving relationship between Naoe and Yasuke, the dual protagonist. Initially, these characters are adversaries; Yasuke works for Oda Nobunaga and is linked to the demise of a fellow Japanese assassin, while Naoe seeks vengeance for her father’s death. Though set on opposing paths, they eventually develop a powerful alliance.
Thanks to Junjiro’s influence, Naoe spares Yasuke, and he, in turn, pledges to aid her mission. Together, they strive to overthrow the Shinbakufu, growing inseparable in their quest. Their partnership is marked by mutual support and shared goals to resurrect what’s lost. While Naoe’s connection with Yasuke may not be as profound as with those who saved her, the narrative leans heavily on the found family theme.
Both protagonists, through their respective narratives, embody the essence of found family—consistently acting for the sake of those they consider allies. Experiencing the story from both perspectives offers a compelling angle that Assassin’s Creed hasn’t fully explored until now. Given that Shadows is just unfolding, the potential directions this story could take are endless.
