Eidos Montreal, the studio behind iconic games like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, shared some tough news today. They’re planning to lay off part of their team.
According to the announcement, up to 75 employees will be affected by these layoffs, although the specifics on who will be impacted haven’t been revealed yet. The studio explains that these layoffs are happening because they simply can’t reassign all personnel to other projects they’re working on. They emphasize that the decision is not a reflection of the affected employees’ dedication or skills, and the company is committed to assisting those leaving as they navigate their next steps.
The official statement read, “Today, we informed our studio staff that we are going to let go up to 75 valuable members, as one of our mandates is coming to an end. It is not a reflection of their dedication or skills, but unfortunately, we don’t have the capacity to entirely reallocate them to our other ongoing projects and services.”
They went on to add that the talented and experienced professionals who are leaving will receive support as they transition into the job market. Despite these changes, Eidos-Montréal remains focused on delivering the projects they currently have in the pipeline.
This is the latest round of layoffs for the studio, following last year’s similar situation. In January of the previous year, 97 employees were let go due to what the company attributed to “the global economic context.” Around that time, reports also emerged that the parent company, Embracer Group, had canceled a new game in the Deus Ex series.
Eidos Montreal has made a name for itself with beloved franchises such as Deus Ex and Tomb Raider. They’ve also developed titles like 2014’s Thief and the 2021 release, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. More recently, in June, they announced their role as a support studio for PlayGround Games on the forthcoming Xbox title, Fable.
