If you’ve ever dreamed of jumping into No Man’s Sky and living out a life where you’re a dinosaur enthusiast with a Jennifer Aniston-esque twist, today is your day. Hello Games has just rolled out the Relics update, and it’s all about embracing your inner paleontologist by collecting enormous alien fossils.
Earlier this year in January, the game expanded with its second massive Worlds update. This brought a dazzling array of “billions of new stars and planets” to explore. Among these celestial wonders are immense gas giants and bizarre flying squid creatures that might give you a slap if you anger them with your fishing antics.
The Relics update, detailed in a blog post and video, shines a spotlight on space paleontology. Much like Ross Geller from Friends, when he’s not earnestly protecting his sandwich or dressing up in festive armadillo garb, you can now traverse the stars in search of “hundreds of unique bones.” You’ll be piecing these bones together in hopes of reconstructing the appearance of ancient creatures. Could you cheekily rearrange bones to convince NMS’s assorted alien inhabitants that they hail from a goofy race of high-tech beings known as the Fartongueians? It’s a possibility worth exploring.
But hold on. Along with the fossil hunting, the update introduces Reanimated Guardians—massive stone lifeforms that guard these fossil sites from curious adventurers. Far from being silly rock creatures with faces where their bums should be, these protectors are rather impressive. Besides them, you’ll find Living Stone Sentries and Colossal Stone Effigies, huge remnants of long-lost alien civilizations standing sentinel over relic worlds.
You may even come across some living fossils like Titanic Boneworms and other “skeletal fauna” wandering planets rich in bones or hiding out in purple star systems. When you’re ready, you can swing by Space Stations to meet Fossil Collectors, where you can sell or trade your bone exhibits for an eclectic mix of new fossils, or even experiment with bones in your cooking.
Don’t miss the chance to join the Galactic Palaeology Society. The new expedition Relics introduces rewards like a sentient rock jetpack, the option to morph into a sentient rock yourself, and a skeletal animal companion by your side.
