Red Dead Redemption fans find themselves in a sort of waiting game. Since the last installment dropped in 2018, there’s been no clear hint that a third chapter is in the works. Rockstar’s iconic western series is celebrated for its exceptional storytelling, yet right now, a continuation seems to be a distant possibility.
Whether RDR3 sits on Rockstar’s to-do list post-GTA 6 is anyone’s guess, leaving room for plenty of speculation about the series’ future. One of the big questions looming over RDR3 is its lead character. Could it spotlight another member of the Van der Linde gang, like Sadie or Charles, or will it venture into new territory with a fresh storyline beyond the infamous outlaws? If Rockstar aims to change things up, drawing inspiration from RDR1 by exploring the evolution of the Pinkertons could offer an intriguing narrative shift.
Traditionally, Red Dead Redemption gravitates towards stories of career criminals. While this makes for engrossing narratives, following a lifelong outlaw might feel overdone in a potential third installment. A fresh direction could be delving into the story of a respected figure turning to a life of crime. This perspective could unearth a rich vein of storytelling potential.
In RDR2, the Pinkerton National Detective Agency played a key antagonistic role, while RDR1 depicted its rise. Edgar Ross, a former Pinkerton leader, eventually commands the newly minted Bureau of Investigation, highlighting the rapidly changing landscape of the Wild West. The nation was becoming more serious about stamping out the outlaw lifestyle.
Examining a Pinkerton or Bureau agent who grows disillusioned with their agency’s ways over time could provide fertile ground for a new protagonist. Linking the narrative to the Van der Linde gang and the broader series, RDR3 might focus on a Bureau agent working under Edgar Ross who ultimately becomes disenchanted with Ross’s tactics. Given Ross’s betrayal of John Marston at the end of RDR1, it’s plausible that one of his men could start to question law and order.
Venturing back into Red Dead Redemption’s world presents endless possibilities. While the Van der Linde gang is filled with compelling characters, they may have had their time in the spotlight. RDR3 might serve as a prequel even further back in time, though this runs the risk of predictability. However, revisiting favorite characters in their younger days would surely excite many fans.
There’s also the proposal of exploring Dutch and Hosea’s early days, which is a strong contender for a prequel angle. As it stands, Rockstar’s plans for the series remain a mystery. After GTA 6, fans can hopefully look forward to news about what’s next for Red Dead Redemption. Meanwhile, the gaming community is left eagerly hoping that RDR3 eventually becomes a reality.
