Sometimes, a gaming mod gains such immense popularity that it evolves into something entirely new. Consider how PUBG and DayZ emerged from the versatile world of Arma, or how The Forgotten City was born from Skyrim. Similarly, Total Chaos, a chilling horror FPS, is essentially a reimagined version of a monumental Doom 2 mod, now rebuilt with the power of Unreal Engine 5. Developed by a team that includes the original mod’s creator, Total Chaos delivers a blend of Silent Hill-like frights and survival mechanics reminiscent of Stalker. As a highlight of Steam Next Fest, a fresh demo has been released, and fans can mark their calendars for its official debut later this year.
Initially introduced in 2018 as a total conversion mod for Doom 2, Total Chaos has now emerged as its standalone game. It weaves a haunting and atmospheric tale, drawing players into Fort Oasis. This was once a bustling mining town, now swallowed by darkness and corruption. With only a crackling, cryptic voice guiding you on the radio, you’re plunged into the depths of the mines and the eerie structures surrounding them, on a mission to unravel unsettling secrets.
While it has its roots in Doom, Total Chaos breaks away from the typical high-adrenaline combat of classic boomer shooters. It’s an FPS, but firearms and bullets aren’t readily available. Instead, you’ll find yourself often resorting to melee combat. Resources are scarce and must be used wisely. You can craft makeshift weapons from the odds and ends scattered throughout Fort Oasis, but keep in mind—your inventory is limited by weight, so you can’t stockpile an arsenal or lug around too many materials.
Now, if you’re eager to fully envelop yourself in this game’s spine-chilling atmosphere, there’s great news: a VR version will be available at launch. Previously expected to release sometime in 2025, Total Chaos and its VR edition now have an official release date set for Steam: Thursday, July 24.
Trigger Happy Interactive, the developer behind the game, has more in store post-launch. They’ve announced a paid DLC expansion called Epilogue, which promises to deliver “an extended narrative, unexplored locations, and a never-before-seen tenth chapter.”
If you’re itching to dive into the chaos but can’t wait until July, there’s good news. A newly polished demo is now available courtesy of Steam Next Fest, offering you a glimpse into the terrifying world of Total Chaos. You have until Monday, March 3, to give it a try.
