Daredevil has made his mark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a while now, but his upcoming series might take a fresh direction, not dwelling much on his past appearances.
Back in 2021, Marvel delighted fans by officially introducing Matt Murdock, played by the ever-talented Charlie Cox, into the MCU fold. He reappeared in “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” which took a lighter, more comedic tone compared to the intense, gritty feel of the Netflix “Daredevil” series. This contrast is likely to persist in “Daredevil: Born Again.” Interestingly, even with Marvel’s meticulous planning, Born Again’s showrunner, Dario Scardapane, hinted that Daredevil’s earlier MCU contributions might not be heavily referenced in the new Disney Plus series. In a chat with SFX magazine, Scardapane shared, “Marvel has a master plan, and what you’re doing causes ripple effects. I would pitch stuff very early and I would hear that they had other plans.”
He further explained that he has “plenty of leeway up until I hit the larger-scale plan for the MCU.” In crafting this version of Daredevil, much is specific to his current personal struggle, down to his suit and the point at which the story picks up in his life. Events like his brief romance with She-Hulk have occurred, but not all of these plot points will be emphasized.
Many fans will likely embrace this new direction, and there’s even a hint of a new love interest, Heather Glenn, played by Margarita Levieva. Yet, this situation highlights some challenges of creating within a shared universe. Perhaps spinning off more unique stories could ease these kinds of hurdles for Marvel.
Scardapane added that “we’ve moved Matt through other corners of the MCU, and now he’s back in his own story.” While not revealing too much, he suggested viewers might meet an unexpected character who becomes organically woven into their tale. Set in the bustling, chaotic New York of today’s MCU, the narrative promises surprises. Who this mysterious figure could be is anyone’s guess, but the anticipation builds as the series is set to premiere on March 4 in the U.S. and March 5 in the UK.
