In an intriguing turn of events, news has emerged that Sony has decided to pull the plug on its anticipated Horizon MMORPG, often referred to as Project H. This project, which was under development at NCSoft, was allegedly the sole Horizon title not being crafted by Guerrilla Games, the originators behind the franchise.
Back in November 2022, the South Korean media outlet MTN leaked information suggesting that NCSoft, a significant player in the game development and publishing world, was working on this MMORPG, internally labeled as Project H. Despite NCSoft’s repeated job postings referencing the project, both Sony and NCSoft remained silent, offering no official confirmation.
Recently, though, it appears NCSoft’s hiring drive for Project H has come to a halt. Reports from MTN indicate that Sony made the call to cancel the development as a result of a strategic viability review in late 2024. The decision reportedly impacted developers early in 2025, with staff being reassigned shortly after. Interestingly, Sony’s cancellation wave didn’t stop there; two additional live-service games reportedly met the same fate—Bluepoint was working on a God of War multiplayer experience, and Bend Studio was developing an undisclosed project.
Shifting gears, it seems Sony has been busy reevaluating its portfolio, having canceled over ten live-service games within just three years. Besides Project H, 2024 saw the termination of games like Concord, which shockingly ceased operations just days after launching in August. Other casualties included a Destiny spin-off titled Payback by Bungie, a mysterious fantasy title from London Studio, and even a Twisted Metal installment planned by Firesprite still in its early planning phases.
Delving into the list of halted projects, it’s clear this isn’t an isolated incident, with high-profile titles like Spider-Man: The Great Web and The Last of Us Online facing the same axe. It’s a striking reminder of the challenging landscape these live-service games operate within.
Despite this setback, not all is lost for Horizon fans eager for new multiplayer experiences. Guerrilla Games remains actively involved in developing a Horizon multiplayer game aimed at the future, possibly eyeing a release alongside the PS6. Since Guerrilla hinted at the project back in 2022, speculation abounds, with further hints revealing that development might trace back to as early as 2018.
A glance at some online job postings from Guerrilla further fuels the theory that the upcoming multiplayer title might bypass the current generation, setting its sights on the next-gen PS6 console, anticipated between 2027 and 2028. The Horizon series continues to hold its allure, promising to deliver epic, robotic creature battles in stunning post-apocalyptic settings. Despite these bumps, the franchise remains a beacon of exploration and adventure.
