In the complex world of Warhammer 40K, human society isn’t solely shaped by a hyper-militarized authoritarian regime. It’s more than just Space Marines and Martian cyborgs; it’s a realm dominated by a formidable theocracy that worships the Emperor of Mankind as a god-figure. The ‘Blood and Zeal’ set captures this dynamic vividly. Roughly half of the models in this collection are fervent zealots, deeply misled by their unwavering belief in a false deity. These figures represent individuals who bear the responsibility for the mass civilian populations of the 41st millennium. Meanwhile, the remaining miniatures are aligned with Chaos – a stark contrast that paints a broader picture of this universe.
Known as the Ecclesiarchy, this theocratic entity represents one of the most cunning elements within the 40K universe. Even though the Emperor explicitly advised against his own deification, the lore lays out the rise of the Cult of the Emperor. This religion acts as a mechanism for maintaining control, oppressing the populous into compliance. The Ecclesiarchy isn’t the sole source of humanity’s darker tendencies such as xenophobia and mob violence, but it certainly doesn’t deter them either. Within the Imperium, fear and brutality are ingrained rather than anomalous. The miniatures available now bring a tangible aspect to these narrative concepts.
Truly, these figures represent some of the most obedient yet misguided fanatics imaginable. It’s fitting they’re packaged with Chaos forces. The background lore accompanying the set highlights how the Ecclesiarchy’s members far outnumber the Space Marines. They might even surpass the Imperial Guardsmen in terms of religious extremism within this corner of the galaxy. And yes, as you might suspect, they’re not portrayed in the most flattering light.
Despite their flaws, these zealots are depicted as the essential glue holding the Imperium of Mankind together. Their fervor and aggression are what keep humanity from succumbing to Chaos, Tyranids, Orks, or any of the myriad other threats aiming to obliterate humankind from the galactic stage. Hence, there’s a kind of importance in finally having physical figures to complement their roles in the lore.
‘Blood and Zeal’ not only enriches the storytelling universe and provides valuable content for Kill Team but also fills a broader role within the hobby. These miniatures should have a presence across all facets of tabletop 40K – from Kill Team and Necromunda to the full-scale Warhammer 40,000 and even tabletop RPGs like Imperium Maledictum.
Personally, I find them utterly detestable. Yet, there’s also a sense of satisfaction in having them as tangible collectibles. If nothing else, consider acquiring them so you can meet their intense, fervent gazes head-on.
